India's Defense Industry in a nutshell
Based on SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) Arm’s exporter report for 2015-19, India ranked for the first time at 23rd position out of 25 nations. India’s defense export in 2015-19 increased by a staggering 426% from 2010-14 list. Though India’s export is mere 0.2% of World’s total. India’s defense export for 2015-16 was ₹1521crore, which rose to ₹4682crore in 2017-18 and finally rose further to ₹10745crore in 2018-19. Out of total export, 46% goes to Myanmar, 25% to Sri Lanka and 14% to Mauritius. India has been exporting arms since 1959 to a select few, friendly countries. The exports were sporadic and technology available was ageing. By 2013-14, our exports were a meagre $113 million (at then exchange rates). USA is at top with 36% of World’s total, followed by Russia with 21% and China is at 5th position with 5.5% of World’s total. India’s defense import in 2015-19 decreased 32% from 2010-14 list, which 9.2% of Global import. India has delivered a kilo class submarine INS Sindhuvir to Myanmar Navy and this will be the first submarine of the neighboring country. The step is in accordance with India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and also in line with India’s commitment to building capacities and self-reliance in the neighboring countries.

Bharat Dynamic Limited (BDL), headquartered in Hyderabad, has a revenue of ₹3,095.20 crore (US$430 million) in FY20. Godrej Aerospace delivers the airframe of BrahMos missile. Lockheed Martin, the iconic manufacturer of F22 and F35 fighter jets, is at top spot with US$ 47.2 billion of defense sales.
