India's Aviation Sector

India's air passenger traffic stood at 341.05 million in FY20, a CAGR of 11.13% from FY16 - 20. Domestic passenger stood at 274.50 million. The freight traffic grew at a CAGR at 5.32% during FY16-20 from 2.70 MT (million tonnes) to 3.33 MT.

The top Indian airports based on Air passenger Traffic in FY20 are -

1. Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi (DEL) - 67.30 million

2. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM) - 45.87 million

3. Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR) - 32.36 million

4. Chennai International Airport, Chennai (MAA) - 22.27 million

5. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata (CCU) - 22.01 million

6. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad (HYD) - 21.65 million

Among top 50 busiest airports, USA has 15, China has 9 and India has just 2 (New Delhi and Mumbai). USA's Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is World's busiest with 110.53 million passengers in FY20.

The India airports featured in "Skytrax World's Top 100 Airports 2020" are -

#50 New Delhi (DEL)

#52 Mumbai (BOM)

#68 Bengaluru (BLR)

#71 Hyderabad (HYD)

Singapore's Changi holds the number one position.

According to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) data, 4.232 billion passengers travelled in 2018. The no. of air-passengers based ICAO data worldwide by registered country in 2018 - 

1. USA - 889 million (21.01%)

2. China - 611.44 million (14.5%)

3. Ireland - 167.6 million

4. UK - 165.39 million

5. India - 164.04 million (3.9%)

6. Japan - 126.39 million

7. Turkey - 115.6 million

8. Indonesia - 115.15 million

9. Germany - 109.8 million

10. Brazil - 102.11 million

54. Pakistan - 6.88 million

67. Bangladesh - 5.98 million

The growth of India's air passenger is as follows -

1970 - 2.67 million

1990 - 10.86  million

2000 - 17.29 million

2005 - 27.88 million

2010 - 64.34 million

2015 - 98.92 million

To give India's aviation sector an extra push GoI launched UDAN scheme in 27 April 2017 with the objective of "letting the common citizen of the country fly", aimed at making air travel affordable and widespread, to boost inclusive national economic development, job growth and air transport infrastructure development of all regions and states of India.

Due to low ticket cost, Indian airlines such a IndiGo, Vistara has fuel cost 34% compared to Global average of 24%. In Jan 2020, IndiGo became first Indian carrier to have fleet size of 250 planes, first airline to operate 150 flights per day.

With current fleet capacity, India has MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) market value of $900 million, which will reach $1.75 billion if the ordered 100 aircrafts are added.
